The Healthiest Way to Drink Your Coffee
September 30th, 2012
Coffee is no longer a beverage that gets us through the day. It has become a part of our daily routine, a way to socialize, and an appealing treat to help motivate us to get some work done. There have been a ton of studies that try to figure out whether having coffee in our daily routine is a good or bad thing. The truth of the matter, just like everything else you consume, is that you need to be aware of exactly what you’re digesting and that you are doing it in healthy moderation. Drinking basic black coffee has no fat and few calories, it can turn into a huge meal when you add milk, syrup, and sweetener.

Kitchener-Waterloo, It's Time to Follow the Frog!
September 21th, 2012
"You are a good person. You spend time with your family. You work out at the gym. You conserve water while showering. You like nice clothes. You give to charity; you recycle. You drive a Prius, but you ride your bike when you can...But there's a part of you that tells yourself that you're not so good. That you could be doing more. That the world is falling apart at the seams, and all you've been doing is yoga."
Follow the Frog Week is the perfect opportunity for us to take our passion for justice, and enthusiasm for equality to the next level. As the video posted above goes on to tell us, the rainforest is being destroyed at a rate of 32 million acres per year. We know that's bad. Really bad. But what are we supposed to do about it over here in Kitchener-Waterloo?

What are the Healthiest Teas to Drink?
September 17th, 2012
In this day and age where obesity and cancer run rampant throughout the world, there has been somewhat of a desperate shift to find ways to prevent and/or cure these ailments. No matter where you look, you are almost guaranteed to find a test or study that swears by some sort of cure all food or drink that will provide you with everything you need to be the healthiest you can be. This, frankly, is unrealistic and often taken out of context. The reality of the situation is that you need nutrients from a variety of different sources and almost everything (excluding the obvious Big Macs) can be good for you as long as it’s ingested in moderation. Tea is one of those “cure all” drinks that many people swear by. So I’m here to help you realize that each kind of tea has its own, if similar, health benefits and that there is not just one healthiest tea to drink.

Small business owners who want to provide coffee for their employees often don’t put enough thought into the actual machine they want to buy. What is the Difference Between Fair Trade and Rain Forest Alliance Certified?
September 12th, 2012
We're living in a time of social justice awareness. Since coffee can't be widely grown in the climate of North America, it must be imported from other countries. Although these countries have a better climate when it comes to growing coffee, their economic climate is far from ideal. For this reason, many wealthier companies have taken advantage of the poorer, coffee growing countries; namely by paying their employees unfair wages, providing inadequate working conditions, and using practices which are harmful to the environment.

What Do I Buy? The Keurig vs. The Tassimo
September 9th, 2012
The Keurig and the Tassimo are probably two of the most well-known single serve coffee brewing machines in the market today. In general, both the Tassimo and the Keurig brewers rely on a microprocessor to manage the volume and temperature of the brew. This means that these machines are both essentially “smart”, which is part of the reason why they are in direct competition with each other. Although they are similar, Keurig is the clear front-runner in the market and for good reason.

Does Coffee Equal Better Business?
August 20th, 2012
Coffee has become a staple item in almost every North American home. Over sixty-five percent of employees drink coffee on the job, which is an average of three cups per day (Horowitz, 2011). Despite our heavy reliance on coffee, there are still many workplaces that don’t provide it for their employees. In those cases, employees choose to wait in long lines at Starbucks or Tim Horton’s to get their daily shot of caffeine. To most people this is just a typical part of a daily routine. But does it have to be?

Hard water & coffee machine repairs
June 4, 2012
Today, one of our service people came out to show me something he had pulled out of a commercial coffee machine repair he was working on. It was a ¼” thick piece of lime scale. The water in our region is extremely hard and without proper maintenance, any machine that regularly has hot water in it will develop a scale build up.
This machine had that level of build up throughout the entire boiler. It had been brought in because the machine was not producing coffee any more. As he worked on it, Joel, the service person, found that the boiler as well as the entire coffee delivery line, was completely jammed with lime. Every joint had to be soaked in an acid bath before he had a chance of being able to open it. As coffee machine repair goes, this one was worse than normal, but it is a common enough situation we see.
Regardless of if it is commercial or residential use, making sure that you are using a filter that removes minerals from the water going into your machine and regularly doing maintenance to keep scale levels down will go a long way to ensuring your machine’s health and keep the cost of any coffee machine repairs down.
Finding the right office espresso
March 28, 2012
There’s a great feeling being able to help someone achieve happiness. Recently, one of our long term espresso clients came in with her machine for repair. While we were discussing what was wrong with her machine, she commented that she was hoping things could happen quickly, because she missed her espresso. I offered her an espresso from one of the machines we have been using for our office espresso program, the Francis Francis! Y1.
Delighted, she accepted my offer and in about 20 seconds, she was drinking her espresso and grinning happily.
“Do you sell that machine and if so, how much?”
It is a machine we use predominantly for office espresso, but absolutely, we sell the machine. She said she’d have to think about it, possibly ask for it as a birthday present later in the year. She headed out and I went back to my day.
Fast forward to 2 days later – she came to pick up her machine that had been repaired. She arrived with 2 friends, both also espresso people. We had to show her friends the Y1 and let them see for themselves how good the espresso was. From her friends, I learned that she was extremely picky about her espresso and that she had been talking about the espresso she had the other day to everyone she knew about the wonderful espresso she had from the office espresso company she had repairing her big espresso machine.
The others also tasted the espresso, made with illy’s iperEspresso capsules, agreeing with the original client that the taste & crema were excellent and the iper capsules made the entire process simple, easy & clean.
In the end, two office espresso machines were purchased. We included a case each of the capsules and some very happy and excited customers left, ready to have espresso at the office & the cottage that will give them what they want and not any of the mess they didn’t.
